Assistant Caretaker

St Edmund’s RC Primary School is a warm, welcoming and inclusive school committed to providing the very best environment for our children to learn, grow and thrive. We are looking to appoint a dedicated, proactive and reliable Assistant Caretaker to join our team and help us maintain a safe, clean and well-presented school site.


About the Role

As our new Assistant Caretaker, you will support the Site Manager and School Business Manager in ensuring the school buildings and grounds are secure, well maintained and ready for learning each day. This is a hands-on role requiring flexibility, initiative, and a commitment to high standards.

You will be involved in tasks including site security, cleaning duties, minor maintenance and repairs, statutory checks, and ensuring the school is safe and welcoming for pupils, staff and visitors.

Some occasional out-of-hours work will be required for school events.


Key Responsibilities

Security & Safety

  • Act as a key holder and respond to call-outs when required
  • Open and lock school gates, secure buildings and set alarms
  • Carry out end-of-day security checks across the site

Cleaning & Presentation

  • Support the termly and annual deep-cleaning programme
  • Ensure playgrounds, paths and communal areas are tidy and free from litter
  • Clean areas soiled by pupils when needed
  • Replenish toilet and handwashing supplies daily

Maintenance

  • Conduct daily, weekly and termly site checks
  • Carry out minor repairs and improvements (e.g. fitting shelves, paint touch-ups, building classroom resources)
  • Help maintain outdoor equipment and school facilities
  • Monitor efficient use of water, heating, and lighting
  • Apply rock salt and ensure safe access during adverse weather

General Duties

  • Complete statutory checks and record keeping (including legionella monitoring)
  • Ensure halls and shared areas are prepared for the next school day
  • Undertake training relevant to the role
  • Work professionally, courteously and in line with all school and Council policies

Safeguarding

  • Demonstrate an understanding of child protection and confidentiality
  • Report concerns to the school’s designated safeguarding lead
