SEND General Subjects Teacher Post Reference Number: EXP-GEN ELWS 001 Post Title: SEND Teacher General Subjects Recruiting Manager: Headteacher Location: Expanse Learning Wigan School, Tyrer Avenue, Wigan, WN3 5XE Salary: £31,650 to £43,607 (QTS Status) Spine point dependent upon experience. ECT’s will be considered for this post. Work Pattern: FTE (37.5 Hrs per week) Responsible to: Assistant Headteacher Responsible for: The delivery of general subjects Closing Date: 19/10/2026 The SEND General Subjects Teacher will be responsible for delivering high-quality, personalised education to students aged 1116 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The role aims to ensure that all students, regardless of their starting point, are supported to engage with learning, develop functional skills, emotional regulation, independence and positive attitudes to education. The post holder will plan and deliver engaging, differentiated and accessible learning across a range of curriculum areas, informed by Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). The role is particularly suited to teachers with a primary background who are confident teaching across the curriculum and adapting learning for pupils working significantly below age-related expectations. Through a trauma-informed, inclusive and student-centred approach, the teacher will foster positive relationships, promote behaviour for learning, and work closely with teaching assistants, therapists and the wider multidisciplinary team to remove barriers to learning and support progress in all its forms. Key Responsibilities Teaching & Learning · Plan, deliver and evaluate high-quality, engaging and differentiated lessons across a range of curriculum areas. · Adapt the curriculum to ensure it is accessible, relevant and ambitious for all students, including those working significantly below age-related expectations. · Deliver learning that supports functional skills, independence and preparation for adulthood. · Use a range of multi-sensory, practical and responsive teaching strategies. · Break down learning into small, achievable steps and celebrate progress in all its forms. · Create a safe, structured and stimulating learning environment that promotes positive behaviour and emotional regulation. · Assess, monitor and record student progress using formative and summative assessment appropriate to a SEND setting. · Set aspirational yet realistic targets aligned to EHCP outcomes. · Contribute to annual reviews, progress reviews and multi-agency meetings. · Provide clear and accurate reports to parents/carers and senior leaders. · Contribute to parents’ evenings and whole-school events. · Implement the school’s behaviour policy consistently using positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies. · Support students’ emotional wellbeing through trauma-informed practice. · Act as a safeguarding role model and follow all safeguarding and child protection procedures. · Maintain high expectations for behaviour, inclusion and student dignity at all times. · Work collaboratively with teaching assistants to plan, deliver and adapt learning. · Liaise with SLT, SENCOs, pastoral teams, therapists and external professionals. · Build positive, professional relationships with families and carers. · Contribute to whole-school planning, review and development. · Maintain up-to-date knowledge of SEND and inclusive teaching practice. · Engage in continuous professional development and reflective practice. · Contribute to curriculum development and resource creation. · Fulfil all professional duties in line with the Teachers’ Standards and school policies. · Carry out any other reasonable duties as directed by the Headteacher. · Candidates will be required to act as a form tutor. · Candidates will be expected to deliver whole-school assemblies related to a variety of themes. · Candidates will be expected to contribute to whole-school events when requested. · Candidates will be expected to attend meetings, parents’ evenings and educational visits as required. The Personal Specification: Criteria Essential/ Desirable Source Qualifications PGCE qualification or equivalent (Primary or SEND route). Essential Application QTS or QTLS Status. Essential Application Additional SEND-related training or qualifications. Desirable Application/Interview GCSE Grade C/5 or above in English & Maths. Essential Application Knowledge Strong curriculum knowledge across a range of subjects (e.g. English, Maths, Humanities, PSHE), appropriate to pupils working below age-related expectations. Essential Interview A secure understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including: Essential Interview Knowledge of adaptive teaching and differentiated instruction for pupils working significantly below age-related expectations. Essential Interview Understanding of EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) and how to use them to plan, deliver and review learning. Essential Interview Awareness of safeguarding, child protection, and statutory guidance (e.g. Working Together to Safeguard Children). Essential Interview Knowledge of positive behaviour support and trauma-informed practices. Essential Interview Familiarity with functional skills, and alternative qualification pathways where appropriate. Essential Interview Understanding of assessment for learning in a SEND context, including small-step progress and non-linear development. Essential Interview Skills Ability to plan and deliver a personalised, multi-subject curriculum suited to pupils’ cognitive, social and emotional needs. Essential Interview Ability to break down learning into small, manageable steps across a range of subjects. Essential Interview Skilled use of multi-sensory, practical and visual teaching approaches. Essential Interview Strong communication skills, able to explain concepts clearly to pupils with speech, language and processing difficulties.
