Health & Safety Officer (Place), Temporary Role Grade 11

Based at Bradley Fold, Town Hall & external work locations as required across the Borough

About the role

A great opportunity to join Bury Council’s Health & Safety Team in a new role, on a 15 month contract, primarily supporting our Place Directorate services (Includes; Waste collection, Street cleansing, Street lighting and Street works, Grounds maintenance, Pest Control, Vehicle workshop, Facilities maintenance). You’ll provide practical, timely H&S advice, help embed safe systems of work, and promote a positive, proactive safety culture.

What you’ll do:

  • Advise managers and teams; develop/review H&S policies, procedures and risk assessments.
  • Deliver audits/inspections, produce action plans, and track improvements.
  • Investigate incidents/ill-health (including RIDDOR) and recommend preventative measures.
  • Plan and deliver training, briefings and toolbox talks.
  • Support and encourage safe working practices and champion best practice.
  • Monitor contractors and other working partners.

What we’re looking for:

  • Level 5 H&S qualification (or working towards) or strong equivalent experience; NEBOSH and IOSH membership desirable.
  • Knowledge of the delivery council services or work experience would be beneficial.
  • Strong organisational skills and confidence using Microsoft 365 and reporting systems.
  • Excellent soft skills: collaborative team worker, able to build relationships, network, influence and persuade at all levels (including contractors).
  • Confident communicator who can write clear guidance and deliver engaging training.

Working style:

Hybrid working is supported, but this is a hands-on role requiring regular in-person working with colleagues at both Bradley Fold and the Town Hall with regular external visits to work locations and other operational sites. Therefore a driving licence would also be beneficial.

Normal hours of work are 37 hours per week based around the usual business working week. However, dependent on service requirements, you may be required to work on a rota basis, but flexibility is needed including the ability to work occasional evenings or weekends as our workshop works 24/7 and some services start early and operate out of 'normal office hours'. The flexibility is required to also be able to attend any emergency response.
